The Joke Writes Itself

A story to inspire indeed. My friend and blogger, ArmadilloJoe, brought this to my attention. KUTV in Salt Lake City did a human interest story on Brigham Larkin, a 17 year old boy who dresses like Bush, sings the National Anthem every day in front of his bathroom mirror, and collects ties similar to what Bush wears when Larkin sees him on TV. George Bush is his hero. Larkin wants to be president some day.

Oh yeah, Larkin has Down Syndrome.

I don't mean to be cruel here. I am in no way trying to poke fun at Larkin, but it really is a shame that Bush was and is president during Larkin's formative years. I don't hesitate to think that any president would probably have had the same effect on Larkin. It's too bad his hero is such a rat bastard and the kid doesn't even realize it.

But don't just read the article, take a look at the video. The newscasters are gushing over Larkin like he's a Cabbage Patch Kid. He's a human being for Christ's sake, but they all sound as if they're goo-gooing over a baby or a monkey performing parlor tricks.

The good news for Larkin is now that we've seen Curious George in action, it wouldn't be a far stretch for him to actually run for the GOP nomination and have a realistic shot at winning. President Half-Wit has opened the door and now we can truly say anyone can grow up to be president. Although what might hinder Larkin more than his mental challenge is his Mormon religious beliefs.

You would have to be mentally challenged to consider Bush a hero. That or hooked on oxycotin.

Broadway Carl - your myopia and self-absorption are exceeded only by your absence of knowledge and insensitivity. The subject of your rant, a man with Down Syndrome, is inspired by PATRIOTISM not by a love of any person, President Bush or other. You write like you actually know something, however the opposite is obvious. Get out from behind your keyboard - throwing darts at unwitting subjects - and SERVE someone. Try offering some time at your local High School Resource Class. You'll be amazed at the unconditional love that will be returned, the vistas that are opened, and the embarassment you will feel. I suspect you may well amend your blog with words of apology. Alas - we recognize people like you...quick to talk about things you don't know, but unwilling to check them out. It is because of people like you that this world is so unsettled.

Well "Anonymous", my point, if you'd care to be objective about, is not about Larkin. It is about the exploitation of his story.

The fact that Mr. Larkin says he loves W. and collects ties that look like the ones W. wears speaks volumes to the fact that he would worship WHOEVER was President.

As far as my jibe regarding his religion, it was a critique of the media's perception of the Romney/Mormom story than a criticism of his or anyone's religion.

If you found the story heartwarming, then good for you.
I found it exploitative. Larkin's patriotism had nothing to do with it. I doubt if the same subject would have been covered had Larkin been an anti-war advocate.

I don't know what your life's story is that caused you to be offended, but don't presume to know mine. Yes, the world is unsettled, but I'm certain it's not because of people like me.

Next time, leave your name so we can discuss further although I'm not sure you'll come back to read my response to you.
